If you want to count part of a document rather than the entire document, Word can count the footnotes or endnotes that refer to the selected text. By default, Word doesn't include anything in footnotes or endnotes in these statistics.

Unless you have selected some text, Word counts all text in the document, as well as the characters, and displays them in the Word Count box as the Statistics. The only difference between the two is where these elements appear in the document.
Caveat emptor. But Word’s word count tool can do more than provide the total number of words.
